Onyx

1. I finished my Alek Wek drawing and I'm pretty proud of myself.
I was seriously intimidated by this piece, because I don't think I'd ever drawn a black person before and because I felt like shading her was backwards from how it's usually done.

The picture that made me want to draw her. I'd heard of Alek Wek and seen her pictures and what not and I always have liked what she looks like, I LOVE how long her limbs are, I've always pictured her as a hunter and in my mind's eye, she runs across a savannah with a spear in her hand as she chases her prey. It reminds me a little bit of Janet Jackson's video "Together Again", there's a scene similar to that. There's a picture of her, that reminds me of a panther sitting on a branch resting.
I seriously LOVE how DARK her skin is, I can't get over that and it's one of the things that I really wanted to take advantage of in the drawing, make her look as black as possible.

Close up of same picture, for better reference of her face.
I don't consider her to be beautiful in the same way that I consider Milla to be beautiful, but I still love her features and her body <3

What I used for reference for her ear

From when I was first starting out the drawing

Just about to finish!

Finished piece! <3

Close up

Another close up, I seriously like how her ear turned out XD

I'm pretty proud of myself with how it turned out. It's a 3B pencil over paper, 9 x 12 inches and she's most definitely for sale at USD90.00.

Anatomy

1. I finished "Máscara de Carne" yesterday, it's the second of the anatomical drawings that I've made. The title in English is "Meat Mask", because of the way it's drawn and because the skin of our face is sort of a mask on top of the skull.
As you know, I'm a pretty big fan of the human body, so I really love these two piece and I'm hoping I'll do more kind of like these.
"Máscara de Carne" was the last piece of 2010 <3

The other one of the anatomical drawings is this one, which has no title:

2. I got the second place in the artrise contest in Facebook, I seriously appreciate anybody and everybody that gave me their support in the form of a like, or putting the link up in their profile, journal or blog <3

3. I gave myself a buzz cut approximately on the thirteenth of October, got rid of the mohawk for now, because it was really uneven, because I was trimming it myself and did a REALLY bad job. So I decided to just start from zero.
It's been growing, with no trimming since then, only thing I've trimmed is a little of the back.
I'm curious to see how it's going to look as it grows, but I'm definitely getting the mohawk again.

4. Also, go ahead and like my page and suggest it to all of your friends with the suggest to friends link that is right under the profile picture. See you there! Link to the page: Gabriela Handal Arte

Half Skull

1. artrise contest

I'm participating in an art contest that is taking place in artrise's Facebook page. This is a link to the website: artrise and this is a link to their Facebook page: artrise's Facebook page.
If you wish to participate, by all means, get yourself in there! The contest is going on until December 28 and it consists of making a profile in artrise's website, and publishing that on their Facebook page, along with your contest entry and then getting as many likes as you can in your uploaded piece.
You can upload as many pieces as you like, but you win only with one of them, whichever one got the most likes.
If you would like to support me and my entry, first like artrise's Facebook page and then like my drawing. I entered "Fade", by the way. Here's a link to the drawing and through this same page, you'll be able to like their page and then my drawing:

2. Half skull

This is my most recently finished piece and I'm REALLY proud of her!
I was thinking of the possible interpretations of a half skull piece, but it always comes down to what each person might see and I really prefer not to dissect my reasons for making a piece. Originally I started the piece, because I read a little bit about
transhumanism and I wanted to actually make a half human and the exposed part to be full on machine; but then I remembered a piece I'd started a long time ago that was half skull and half face, I wrote a little bit about that one in the previous entry.
BUT YEAH. While I drew her, I saw that my reference, which are these super awesome anatomical charts for artists, had little cracks in it; then I wondered if that was possible while we are alive, but it really doesn't make sense that we'd have little fractures, 'cuz the skeleton would most definitely heal. So, the artist that drew the charts musta been copying a dead body and so maybe the skull side is some kind of look into the future, minus the eyeball.
Otherwise, I just really like the human body and all the body parts inside, so the half face half skull is kind of a way of seeing two things at the same time.
Or something.
So this piece is not for sale, at least not for now, but she is most definitely available in print form, in 8.5 x 11 inch paper (VERY nice paper, mind you) and each print is USD50.00
This original is 9 x 12 inches, I used pencil, colored pencil watercolor and acrylic on paper and it's without title.
